What is Invisalign?

Invisalign, popularly called “invisible braces,” refers to a popular orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth without visibility. Invisalign aligners are made of clear thermoplastic material, making them essentially invisible to a casual observer. They apply pressure on your teeth to move them in the desired direction over several months. They’re far more attractive and convenient than traditional braces, especially since they’re removable. As long as you wear them for at least 22 hours a day, you have the freedom to take them off before meals.

How does Invisalign Aligners Work?

Invisalign aligner trays are custom-made, transparent, and plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth and bite in the correct direction. Your dentist carefully analyzes your teeth to create the ideal treatment plan, with a unique Invisalign aligner for every stage of your treatment. You have to wear each aligner for approximately two weeks and then move on to the next aligner. As you move from one aligner to the next, your teeth move in a pre-planned treatment path towards optimal alignment.

Initially, Invisalign could only address mild or moderate orthodontic issues. Furthermore, you’ll be given a detailed timeline before starting with the treatment, so you know what to expect.

Invisalign Procedure

The Invisalign treatment process will start with an initial consultation with Dr. Addy. He’ll determine if you’re a viable candidate for Invisalign treatment, by taking X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth. He’ll enter the relevant details into the computer software to generate a 3D overview of how your teeth will move at every stage of your Invisalign treatment. He might make a few adjustments to the rendition to ensure optimal results and convenience and then ask for the aligners to be prepared.

The Invisalign aligners will be prepared in about a month. You’ll have to return to our office for the aligners once they’re ready. Dr. Addy will help you wear the aligners and provide guidelines on how to wear and maintain them for optimal results. You’ll have to change the aligners every two weeks, according to the dentist’s recommendations. Dr. Addy will also schedule a few appointments at regular intervals through your journey to ensure your teeth are progressing correctly and make potential adjustments.

After the last Invisalign aligners have been worn, you’ll have to wear retainers for a few more weeks. The retainers complete the treatment, giving your jawbone enough time to solidify around the new positions. They essentially prevent your teeth from moving back to their original position and undoing months of progress.
